What is Qurbani?

“Once our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked, what is Qurbani? The Prophet (SAW) answered: ‘It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim (as). For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah (SWT)” - Tirmidhi

Qurbani is a religious sacrifice of sheep, cattle, goats or camels which is made after Eid al Adha prayers, between the 10th and 12th days of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. The blessed tradition was passed down to us by our Prophet Ibrahim (as) and Ismail (as) reflecting on their ultimate devotion to Allah (SWT) and the sacrifices they were willing to make.

A sacrifice that each of us needs to make every year, during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the holy calendar, as The Prophet Ibrahim (as) did long ago.

For he had a dream. A dream that Allah demanded Ibrahim (as) prove the strength of his faith. And that he demonstrate his faith, to show that his faith was greater than anything, even his love for his child, that he sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (as), who, astonishingly, urged him to do so. Ibrahim (as), while desperately torn, they both travelled to the top of Mount Arafat, but unable to live with the memory of his act, he blindfolded himself, drew his knife, and prepared to slaughter his son Ismail (as). However, Allah (SWT) spared Ismail (as) and his terrible act of sacrifice by substituting instead a ram in place of Ismail (as) so that Ibrahim (as) could sacrifice the ram.

The blessed tradition of Qurbani

Sometimes known as Udhiyah - was passed down to us by our Prophet Ibrahim (as) and Ismail (as), reflecting on their ultimate love and devotion to Allah (SWT).

Traditionally, one-third of your Qurbani meat would be given to disadvantaged Muslims around the world, with another third given to neighbours and the final third kept for your own family. Now, many people choose to give their entire Qurbani to those in need, helping to ease their suffering.

“There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Qurbani than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart” [Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]
