What We Do

Statistically, one in every 200 people are homeless in the UK. Shockingly, it is estimated that around 307,000 people sleep rough or live in inadequate housing.

The phenomenon of homelessness is a serious problem, compounded by the wait time for homelessness assistance for those who apply for it. In the meantime, before shelter is provided, they are left with no other option but to sleep on the streets.

SKT LOCAL

The phrase charity begins at home is what inspired our initiative entitled SKT Local. This project aims to provide help and support to vulnerable and needy folk in Britain through various ways, including soup kitchens, the delivery of blessing bags to the homeless, UK emergency relief, care home visits, school, youth centre and hospital support, and much more.

SOUP KITCHEN

SKT Welfare runs a successful soup kitchen in the town of Keighley, providing rice and curry on a weekly basis. Established in 2015, the soup kitchen serves individuals every Friday, and the charity provides a further forty meals weekly, to fifteen families who are in dire need of this vital service.

BLESSING BAGS

Volunteers took the lead in distributing 200 homeless kits to the homeless in major cities of the UK, such as Bradford, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham.

Their activity had a personal touch too, as not only did they distribute blessing bags filled with essential winter clothing, but they took the time to sit down, give company to, and have conversation with those they encountered; as well as giving them some gifts and homemade cupcakes. Each Blessing Bag was comprised of a rucksack including a jacket, socks, scarf, gloves, thermal long-johns, thermal top and boxers.

UK FLOOD SUPPORT

In 2015, Storm Desmond caused unparalleled flooding across Cumbria, affecting some 6455 homes and leaving thousands of people homeless.

This region received a month’s worth of rainfall in one day, which impacted 45,000 properties with a loss of electricity. This flooding highlighted the need for an emergency support team in the UK to help on the ground should similar natural disasters strike. SKT Welfare volunteers formed a core response team who visited the impacted areas when the flooding occurred to help clean up and provide assistance, as well as provision those affected with daily essentials like food and cleaning equipment. This is one of our ongoing projects in the UK and we are in need of both generous donations and active volunteers to help keep this project running.
