On Friday 28th September, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi causing a devastating tsunami which has killed 832 people and caused thousands of homes, hotels, shopping malls, and several Mosques to collapse.
Having affected more than 1.6 million people already and with a death toll predicted to reach the thousands, the situation has been described as a tragedy that "could get much worse". Hundreds of bodies have been found on beaches, with authorities fearing many have been washed out to sea in Palu, the worst-hit area which is home to 300,000 people.
The devastation caused by the tsunami wave which was up to six metres high in some places is bigger than originally thought, and the 170 aftershocks felt since have only added to the number of deaths and casualties.
Search and rescue teams are working hard to rescue those trapped in wrecked buildings. The lack of food and clean water has resulted in people turning towards looting local supermarkets in order to have their basic needs met, and mass burials are taking place for those who lost their lives in the worst earthquake to hit Indonesia since 2004.
